Free three color bun beanie crochet pattern

I liked creating the Dutch messy bun beanie and soon I had another beanie in mind.
So here it is: the three color bun beanie crochet pattern!

Materials

  • worsted weight yarn: white, grey and pink
  • crochet hook size 5 mm

Abbreviations (U.S)

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • st = stitch
  • trc = triple crochet
  • 2 dctog = 2 double crochet together
  • sk = skip

Round 1 – 4
Round 5 – 9

Brim

I made a brim video tutorial:

Use white yarn and chain 9.

RowInstructions
Row 2 Crochet in the back loops only: ch 1, sc in each st (8) Turn.
Row 3-84Repeat row 2

If you think your brim is long enough for the required size, you can stop. Make sure you can divide your number of stitches by four.

Brim, row 1 – 84

Fold the sides together and join them with 8 sc.

Turn the brim around so the seem is on the inside. Don’t cut the yarn, but continue.

Hat

Three color messy bun beanie crochet pattern brim

Round 1

Crochet a sc in each round of the brim (that’s 84 sc)

Round 2

Change to grey color . Ch 1; sc in next 2 st; ch1 and skip next st;
*sc in next 3 st; ch1 and skip next st; repeat from * around to last st, sc in last st; close with sl st and ch 3.

Round 3

dc in next st; ch1 and skip next st; *dc in next 3 st; ch 1 and skip next st; repeat from * around to last st, dc in last st;

change to pink and close with a sl st. Leave the grey yarn hanging, so you can pick it up again later.

Round 4

ch1 and sk next st; sc in next st; trc in chain space of the previous round below (drop stitch)
*sc in next st; ch1 and sk next st; sc in next st; trc in space below; repeat from * around until the last st, sc in the last st; close with sl st.

Round 5

Use a sl st to go to the next st.
ch3; dc in next 2 st; ch1 and skip next st;
*dc in next 3 st; ch 1 and skip next st; repeat from * around; change to white color and close with a sl st.
Don’t cut the pink yarn, but leave it hanging so you can pick it up again later.

Round 6

Ch1; sc in first st; ch1 and skip next st; sc in next st; trc in space below;
* sc in next st; ch1 and skip next st; sc in next st; trc in space below; repeat from * around and close with a sl st

Round 7

Ch 4 and skip next st; dc in next 3 st; *ch 1 and skip next st; dc in next 3 st; repeat from * around until last 3 st; ch 1 and sk next st; dc in last 2 st; change to grey and close with a sl st

Round 8

sc in first st (that’s where you closed round 7); trc in space below;
*sc in next st; ch 1 and skip next st; sc in next st; trc in space below; repeat from * around until the last 2 st; sc in next st; ch 1 and skip last st; close with a sl st

RoundInstructions
Round 9Ch 3; dc in next 2 st; ch 1 and skip next st;
*dc in next 3 st; ch 1 and skip next st; repeat from * around and close with a sl st.
Round 10-11Change to pink color. Repeat round 6 and 7.
Round 12-13Change to white color. Repeat round 8 and round 9.
Round 14Change to grey color.
(Sc in the next 3 stitches  – 1 trc  in the skipped stitch of previous round) all around.
Round 15(dc in the next 2 stitches- 2 dctog) all around. (63 st)
Round 16Change color to pink. Crochet 2 dctog all around. (32 st)
Round 17If you think the gap is good enough to pull a bun through, you crochet a dc in each st (32 st)
If you want the gap to be smaller, you crochet: (dc – 2 dctog) all around.  (21 st)
